Happy Birthday, Jack
My son Jack's 13th birthday is today. Now, lest you think I'm merely looking for sympathy (Ack! Another teenager!), I just want to say Jack is a great kid.
Happy and open, he's the one who yells, "Hey, new kid! Why don't you come hang out with us?"
Out of all my kids, he's the jock. Football, wrestling, basketball, swimming, baseball--Jack just does it all. And he does it well.
He's empathetic and always looking out for others. His little brother Mark worships him. He's a leader in his church youth group, a member of student council, and this year he's been elected student council treasurer.
Parent teacher conferences for Jack are a breeze. My shortest PT conference ever was with Jack's 6th grade teacher. I walked into the room and shook his hand introducing myself.
"Oh yeah, Jack," he said. "He's getting all A's and he has no behavior problems." I hadn't sat down yet.
"Well all right!" I said raising my right hand in the air. He high-fived me and I left.
And I think it's safe to say here... We are throwing a surprise party for him tonight. Yeah, I'm going to have about 30 middle school kids descend on my home around 6:00.
For that, I will take sympathy.

Happy birthday to the little dude. Thirty? I think you qualify for something in the DSM-IV. Hope your house survives.
Hey, I will take thirty middle schoolers over three of Bubba's college buddies.....who get drunk and sneak into my apartment at 2am and film me waking up.
They said it was excellent footage for their TV show.
